Venezuela towards peaceful transition

The Secretary of State referred to the fearsome scenarios in Venezuela, which would have been overcome, after the capture of the authoritarian ruler Nicolás Maduro in the midst of a severe political crisis aggravated by a repressive wave of the regime.

“We did not want to see a civil war. We did not want to see a systemic collapse. We did not want to see a mass migration event,” he said, emphasizing the possible extreme circumstances that could affect Venezuelans and that were contained during the Trump government’s rapprochement with Rodríguez.

“They have not seen any of these things,” he stressed after highlighting the stable course that the country has taken, but that the democratic route requires.

“For Venezuela to reach its maximum economic potential, it needs a stable democratic government that motivates the population to invest in the economy, since they will know that they will have the protection of laws and legitimacy. We are well on our way to achieving it,” Rubio remarked.

During their second meeting in Washington, Rubio and Machado are expected to evaluate the course of the Venezuelan situation, at decisive moments to direct the country towards new elections in the second half of the year, according to reports.

The first meeting was in January 2026, when the transition purposes began.
