SAN ISIDRO.- Diego Maradona He ate little, suffered from urinary incontinence and was bedridden: this is how a custodian of the idol described the days before his death at the trial of the former Argentine soccer player’s medical team.
Maradona died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 under home confinement, after neurosurgery.
Aníbal Domingueza custodian who lived with him in the weeks before his death, said that “Ten” ate little, suffered from incontinence when urinating and that he spent entire days without getting out of bed and with symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
The testimony was heard in a new hearing in the process taking place in San Isidro26 kilometers north of Buenos Aireswhich seeks to establish responsibilities among the medical team that treated Maradona during his convalescence after the operation.
The star died from cardiorespiratory arrest and pulmonary edema in a house in Tigernorth of Buenos Aires.
Domínguez, who had worked with Maradona since 2015, lived in that house for about a week until November 22 and said that at that time the star “had fluid retention, he was swollen.”
“Diego was in a bad mood, he treated everyone badly,” the witness further said, adding that it was difficult to wake him up and convince him to take a bath or eat. “He was on top of himself, he didn’t make it to the bathroom,” he recalled.
“I had to come and I wasn’t coming”
The custodian had a fluid dialogue with Maradona’s personal doctor, Leopoldo Luquethe main defendant in the case, and said that in those days he asked him to go see the patient: “He had to come and he wasn’t coming.”
In addition to Luque, six other health professionals are being tried for homicide with possible intent, a figure that implies that they were aware that their actions or omissions could cause Maradona’s death. Everyone claims innocence.
“Diego had just had surgery, there had to be someone responsible. Luque was a doctor and a friend of his; he threw Luque out, he even spit on him and he waited a while and came back and they talked,” said Domínguez.
During the hearing, audios were played in which the custodian told Luque that Maradona was “lost and had tremors” on November 20, which both attributed to alcohol withdrawal.
However, he recalled that that same night Maradona asked to be taken for a ride in a truck and they did.
“You couldn’t clash with Diego and say no because it was worse, he would explode (…) The boss was Diego,” he said before an audience that included two of Maradona’s daughters, Dalma and Gianinna.
