CARACAS- The Parliament of Venezuela, controlled by Chavismo, this Monday asked the prosecutor’s office to apply a new law, which contemplates the maximum prison sentence and almost lifelong disqualifications, to leaders of the legitimate National Assembly elected in 2015.
The request responds to an accusation by Parliament against the legitimate National Assembly – which defends its continuity by alleging fraud in the 2020 legislative elections – for the use of State money for personal property and “conspiracies” against the country.
“And (that) the attorney general immediately applies to these criminals, (…) applies the Liberator Simón Bolívar Organic Law against the blockade,” said the Chavista, Jorge Rodríguez, during the session.
“This implies the penalties that are established in that law of political disqualification (…) it also leads to criminal actions,” he continued.
“Prison and disqualification”
The Bolívar law, promoted by Chavismo, contemplates penalties of up to 30 years in prison and disqualifications from holding public office for up to 60 years for anyone who supports foreign sanctions and promotes or finances “armed or forceful” actions against the country.
The norm was approved at the end of November amid tensions over the questioned re-election of Nicolás Maduro for a third term (2025-2031), denounced as a fraud by the opposition, which demands a victory for the real president-elect, Edmundo González Urrutia in the elections of last July 28.
“It must be immediately applied to Mrs. Dinorah Figuera, Mrs. Marianela Fernández and Mrs. Auristela Vásquez,” Rodríguez added in reference to the president, first and second vice president of the defunct Parliament.
