LIVERPOOL.- Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slot began with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich on Saturday with a goal from Mohamed Salah who broke a Premier League scoring record.
Salah fired home from close range in the 65th minute to take his tally of goals in opening Premier League games of the season to nine, breaking the record previously shared with three legends: Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard.
Five minutes earlier, Salah had set up Diogo Jota for the opener as Liverpool improved after a sluggish first half in their first competitive match under Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in the off-season.
While Liverpool joined Manchester United – who beat Fulham 1-0 on Friday – on a triumphant start to the season, it was a lesson for Ipswich, who had their most famous fan, singer Ed Sheeran, in the VIP box at Portman Road.
This is Ipswich’s first top-flight campaign since 2002 and the team look set to be entertaining, even if they concede a lot of goals with their open style of play.
There are five other fixtures on Saturday, including Arsenal – second in the last two seasons – hosting Wolverhampton.
Reigning champions Manchester City begin the defence of their title on Sunday against Chelsea.
Ramos is out for a long time
Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos will be out of action for at least three months with an ankle injury, the club confirmed on Saturday.
Ramos suffered a severe tear in his left ankle ligaments in the opening game of the season on Friday against Le Havre in the French league, a match that PSG won 4-1.
The 23-year-old Portuguese “will require surgery in the coming days,” the team added.
This is a major blow for the defending French champions as Ramos was expected to be key in the attack following the departure of Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid.
The Portuguese joined PSG permanently last season after spending time on loan from Benfica.
