Liberals in Canada choose successors from Trudeau – Ex -Central Bank Director Favorite

In Canada, the liberal party chooses the successor of Justin Trudeau as party leader and thus later as prime minister. The election should take until Sunday 8:00 p.m. (CET), afterwards the result should be announced. In the internal election of around 400,000 party members, the former central bank chief Mark Carney was a favorite. Another promising candidate was the former Vice Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Trudeau announced his resignation in the early January in view of the poor poll values and internal party differences. The choice of liberals was made in the midst of massive disputes with the United States because of the threats of the new President Donald Trump with higher tariffs against Canada. In addition, the Canadian parliament will be re -elected by October at the latest.

Carney first headed the Bank of Canada and then became the first non-British president of the Bank of England. In the run -up to the part of the party, he secured support from a large part of Trudeaus Kabinett.

Freeland had done a dramatic break with Trudeau in December. In her resignation, she accused the head of government to concentrate on voters instead of stabilizing the Canadian finances in the run -up to the tariffs announced by Trump. According to observers, however, many voters Freeland still link to Trudeaus unpopular politics.

Both Carney and Freeland emphasized that they are the best candidates to defend Canada in conflict with Trump. Trump threatened repeatedly with tariffs and with it that Canada should become “51st state” of the United States.

Carney pays off to have controlled the Canadian Central Bank through the 2008 and 2009 financial crisis and the Bank of England by turbulence according to the Brexit vote. “Canada faces one of the most difficult crises in our history,” he said. “I know how to manage crises.”

According to the data published by the Angus Reid Institute, the Canadians see Carney as a better adversary against Trump. 43 percent of the respondents therefore stated that they trust Carney the most to accept it with Trump. The head of the opposition conservative, Pierre Poilievre, said the information came to 34 percent. However, most surveys see the conservatives as the winner in the parliamentary election to be kept this year.

So far, the still party leader has not said when the winner of the election is replaced by the Liberal Trudeau. Trudeau and his successor will visit Canada’s regional governor Mary Simon – the official representative of King Charles III. This will hire the new party leader with the formation of government. Depending on when the upcoming parliamentary election will take place and how it goes out, Trudeau’s successor could only be a prime minister for a few weeks.
