As Vice President under Joe Biden, she was inconspicuous. But now it is Kamala Harris’s turn. The former prosecutor is prepared. The only question is whether that is enough.
Suddenly everything changes. The president withdraws his candidacy, the party looks for direction, America, no, the whole world stares spellbound at this highly political and yet all too human drama in the White House.
And Kamala Harris? That leaves Kamala Harris.
On Sunday, she thanked President Biden for supporting her presidential candidacy. And she promised to “earn and win” this nomination and to prevent Donald Trump from spending another four years in the White House. But that’s about it in terms of big words and feelings. “We still have 107 days until election day,” she wrote on social media. “Together we will fight. And together we will win.”
Kamala Harris, the woman who is suddenly in the eye of world history, does not want to waste time on staging and word garlands. She wants to move forward, move on.
Her nickname during her studies: “C3”
Her companions say that this determination is the secret of her success. Her college friend Jill Louis remembers the nickname they gave Harris when she was studying at Howard University in Washington D.C.: C3. “Cool, calm and collected.” Louis says Harris has hardly changed since then.
