La Paz – In a context of growing political tension and violence in Bolivia, the Minister of Justice, César Siles, urged the Police to immediately execute the arrest warrants against former President Evo Morales, responsible for the violence unleashed in the country in recent days. The protests promoted by sectors related to Morales have left at least five deceased – four police and a civilian – and dozens of injured.
“It is time to act. 90% of Bolivians are demanding that Evo Morales be apprehended,” Siles said this Friday, while denounced that the events that occurred in Chapare and Llallagua reflect a country in illegality, promoted by those who seek to destabilize the democratic process. The statements were reviewed by the newspaper Duty.
The government of Luis Arce has been severely questioned by its ambiguity against Morales, its former political mentor, who today represents an internal threat to the control of power. Morales, legally disabled for the elections of August 17, remains entrenched in its cochabamba bastion, from where it promotes blockages and disturbances in protest of its exclusion of the electoral process.
Against the official ex -president also weigh complaints for crimes of terrorism and stupro. The latter related to a child under 16 with whom he had a daughter during his presidential mandate, in case of which there are also current detention orders.
Despite the resolutions issued by prosecutors and judges, the Police have not proceeded to capture Morales, arguing “logistics difficulties” due to the territorial control exercised by violent groups that protect it in Lauca Eñe.
“Impose your will”
“The State cannot be subject to the whims of a leader who seeks to impose his will above the law,” said Siles. He also warned that “minority groups with personal interests” intend to sabotage the elections, and celebrated that different sectors of the country have reached an agreement to defend institutionality and democracy.
Morales, accused of promoting confrontation and disobeying the law, represents a focus of destabilization for both the Arce government and the opposition. Meanwhile, the Bolivian population continues to be trapped between political violence and the absence of effective justice.
From the opposition, immediate compliance with the law and the end of impunity for Evo Morales, whose figure continues to polarize the country and weaken its already fragile democratic institutions is required.
