PHILADELPHIA-. He is already MVP of the NBA and Olympic gold medalist, the star pivot Joel Embiid Now he has until the end of this decade to try to win his first title with the Philadelphia 76ers.
With another max contract in his bag, Embiid now wants to chase that championship in Philadelphia — and remain a Sixer for the rest of his career.
“Philadelphia is home,” Embiid wrote on Instagram.
A seven-time All-Star, Embiid has agreed to a $193 million contract extension with the 76ers that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, a person familiar with the deal confirmed.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms have not been announced.
Embiid, 30, graduated from high school in Florida before playing one year in college at Kansas. He announced the news Friday with an Instagram post signing the contract with owner Josh Harris.
“I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything they’ve given me and my family,” Embiid added. “There’s a lot of work to be done. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started.”
Embiid, who had a franchise-record 70 points in a game last season against San Antonio, ended the post with the team’s signature phrase, “#trusttheprocess.”
Embiid — in the second year of a $196 million extension he signed before the 2021 season — became the third key piece to sign massive contracts with the team this offseason.
The Sixers persuaded Paul George to leave the Los Angeles Clippers for a four-year, $212 million contract, while Tyrese Maxey, the NBA’s Most Improved Player, was rewarded with a five-year, $204 million extension.
The 76ers have committed more than $400 million for two players they believe will put them in position to take the crown from the Boston Celtics. Philadelphia’s last title was in 1983.
Throw in the Embiid deal and the Sixers are banking on their Big Third being able to contend for decades.
Embiid was the third pick of the 76ers in the 2014 Draft. He was named MVP after the 2022-23 season and won the gold medal with Team USA at the last Olympic Games in Paris.
He has been selected to the All-NBA team five times and to the All-Star Game seven times in a row between 2017 and 2024, has been recognized three times in the All-Defensive Team and twice as scoring champion.
