In his first appearance since withdrawing from the race for the US presidency, Joe Biden delivers a speech with a passionate appeal for democracy – and promises to “pass the torch to a new generation”.
Joe Biden begins his speech by fulfilling an old promise.
“Defending democracy is more important than any title,” said the President as he addressed the American people from the Oval Office. The best way forward is to “pass the torch to a new generation.” In order to unite the nation, he wanted to make room for “new, younger voices.”
It is Biden’s first public appearance since the 81-year-old announced his withdrawal from the race on Sunday and backed the candidacy of his Vice President Kamala Harris. During the 2020 election campaign, Biden presented himself as a “bridge to a new generation.” Now, four years later, he is keeping his promise.
