For tech billionaire Elon Musk, Joe Biden’s withdrawal is a double celebration: Firstly, he is celebrating himself for his platform X, and secondly, he sees his favorite Donald Trump even further ahead.
As the owner of the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Elon Musk has a loud voice. Not only does the billionaire have more than 190 million profiles following him, he also appears on the homepages of people who have not subscribed to his posts. This makes it difficult to overlook his ambitions in the US election campaign. This time he is particularly committed, because if it were up to him, Trump must win at all costs.
Musk emphasized this particularly after Joe Biden withdrew from the election campaign. Musk and Biden are considered to have fallen out, and the Tesla boss was delighted with the US president’s decision. Musk started off with a mere approval. But the post he served to his audience of millions was already quite something.
One person wrote: “Joe just gave up. The Democratic elite, media conglomerates and billionaire donors successfully pressured the candidate chosen by Democratic voters to give up because he is trailing in the polls and losing. The Democrats are destroying democracy in their quest for power.” Musk shared the post and captioned it, “Exactly.”
“They fear Trump because he is not a puppet.”
Musk then added fuel to the almost conspiracy-theoretical post: “I heard last week that he would be resigning at this exact time. That was common knowledge in DC. The real powers that be are getting rid of the old puppet in favor of one that has a better chance of deceiving the public. They fear Trump because he is not a puppet.” He did not say who or where he allegedly got this information from.
Musk then made it very clear again which camp he sees himself in this election – in case the alleged $45 million in monthly donations to Trump hadn’t made that clear enough. Musk wrote: “My smartest friends, including those who live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been lifelong Democrats, are excited about Trump/Vance. I believe in an America that maximizes individual freedom and merit. That used to be the Democratic Party, but now the pendulum has swung to the Republican Party.”
In the further course of his posts, Musk celebrated the fact that the news of Biden’s withdrawal did not first appear in the traditional media, but on his platform. In fact, Joe Biden had first published the letter in which he explained himself on X. This is quite curious both in view of the relationship between Musk and him and in consideration of the election campaign that Musk is running for Trump.
Whether Joe Biden or Kamala Harris – Musk wants Trump
Musk also shared with the world what he thinks of Vice President Kamala Harris. He quoted a video of Harris introducing herself to a group of people in an unusual way, using pronouns and defining her clothing, and simply wrote: “Imagine four years of that…” What Musk left out was – as is often the case – context. The criticized video of Harris from July 2022 was taken during a meeting with disability rights leaders. Against this background, Harris spoke as inclusively as possible and gave blind listeners a description of her clothing. This can be criticized and ridiculed, but it makes no sense and does not allow any evaluation of Harris’ work.
He didn’t miss the opportunity to make one last tasteless joke about Biden. On July 18, Musk published a picture of a fisherman with the words: “They’re going out fishing with Biden soon.” Now he quoted himself and added: “Poor Fredo.” The combination of picture and comment is presumably an allusion to the film “The Godfather – Part II,” in which Fredo Corleone is murdered during an alleged fishing trip. This also takes up the theory that someone else could have made the decision for Joe Biden.
Elon Musk, who had problems with Biden a few years ago but did not support Trump in the last election, has repeatedly attracted attention in the recent past with a very right-wing conservative attitude. As recently as 2022, he declared that he had traditionally always voted for the Democrats, but that he would probably change his mind in the upcoming election. At least since he took over Twitter, which he renamed X, the tech billionaire has shown a noticeable shift to the right.
