SAO PAULO.- Without respite from injuries, the Brazilian Joao Fonsecaone of the greatest promises of Latin American tennis, announced this Monday that he will take a break to recover physically and mentally.
After missing out due to abdominal discomfort, US Openlast tournament grand slam of the season, Fonseca reappeared over the weekend in the victory of Brazil in view of Swiss in his series by Davis Cup World Group I (3-1).
The victory allows Brazil to participate in the qualifiers for the End of 2027.
“I made a great effort to return and defend Brazil in the Davis Cup, but I still need more time,” he posted on the social network. Instagram.
On Friday, the 20-year-old won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Dominic Stricker.
“It has been a very challenging year for me. Many injuries took me out of important tournaments and prevented me from playing the way I would like,” said the Rio native, 28th in the world rankings of the ATP.
The South American had recurring back problems at the beginning of the year that led to his elimination in the first round of the Australian Open.
His absence could have an impact on the ranking. His best placement was 24th place in November of last year.
“I talked a lot with my team and we came to the conclusion that the best way, at this moment, is to respect the (warning) signs and give my body and mind time and not continue with the tournaments in Asia“Fonseca continued.
Is the defense of your title at risk?
He thus ruled out his participation in the Tokyo ATP 500between September 30 and October 6, and the Shanghai Masters 1000, from October 7 to 18.
He did not compete in those events in 2025, but he did play last October on Basel ATP 500in which he lifted the champion trophy.
Fonseca is scheduled to defend that title between October 24 and November 1, but in the message posted on social networks no deadlines are given for his return.
Despite the problems, Fonseca has had high moments in the season, such as his victory over the legendary Serbian Novak Djokovic in Roland Garrosan event in which he reached the quarterfinals. Reached the third round in Wimbledon.
