Former US President Jimmy Carter (100) will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump (78) in January. But this is not a political decision, reports the New York Post. The 100-year-old’s health is too fragile to risk him taking part in the big ceremony, which usually takes place outdoors in freezing temperatures, a spokesman for the “Carter Center” told the newspaper.
“President Carter has been in hospice care for almost two years. As you can imagine, he no longer appears in public,” the spokesman continued. The former president’s team told USA Today that if Carter were healthier, he would be present at the inauguration. The former politician was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.
Who’s coming to Trump’s second inauguration?
Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter (1927-2023) were also not present at the swearing-in of President Joe Biden (82) and Vice President Kamala Harris (60) in 2021. It was the first inauguration they missed since Carter himself resided in the White House between 1977 and 1981. The Carters moved into a hospice in 2023. Rosalynn died in November 2023 at the age of 96.
It still seems uncertain which former presidents will come to Donald Trump’s second inauguration. According to “USA Today”, there is still no information from George W. Bush (78) and Barack Obama (63) or Bill Clinton (78). Biden will probably be present.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that Amazon plans to donate $1 million to Trump’s inauguration. This was reported by CNN, among others. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (60) will probably visit Trump personally in the coming days. The inauguration will also be streamed on Amazon Video, the company confirmed to CNN.
