MIAMI. Beyond the criminal action against Raúl Castro for the death of the Brothers to the Rescue, this investigation is loaded with symbolism and one of them is that Jasón Quiñones, of Cuban origin, the attorney general of Miami, is part of this process that vindicates the Cuban people.
Jason’s first surname is Reding, but he decided in 2023 to adopt his mother’s name as a tribute to this Cuban refugee lady. He did so when he ran for state judge.
Who is this judge who promises justice to the Cubans?
He graduated in anthropology with a minor in military science from the University of Florida and subsequently earned a J.D. from Florida International University College of Law.
On August 13, 2025, Quiñones was sworn in as federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Florida. The then US Attorney General, Pam Bandi, swore him in.
“As son of a Cuban political refugee and proud Miami native, I am honored by the trust that President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, and the United States Senate have placed in me. As United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, I will work tirelessly to protect the American people, restore impartial justice and defend the rule of law without fear or favor,” he said during the swearing-in.
In addition, he has a military career of more than 23 years of service. In April of this year he was promoted to the rank of colonel in the US Air Force Reserve and currently works as reserve senior legal advisor in it United States Central Commandwhere provides advice on combat operations lawsmaritime interdiction and national security.
More than 30 years waiting
This May 20, when Raúl Castro was formally accused of allegedly being involved in the downing of two civilian planes, on February 24, 1996, operated by the Brothers to the Rescue, he made another promise:
Quiñones stressed that the Cuban community had been waiting for this decision for more than 30 years, including his mother.
“This is the island for Cuban refugees in search of the American dream. My mother was in this same place,” said the attorney excitedly, with his voice breaking.
The accusation represents an unprecedented event for the Cuban exile in the United States and once again puts the spotlight on one of the most sensitive episodes linked to the Cuban regime.
