Jannik Sinner withdraws from the Shanghai Masters due to a knee injury

The Italian Jannik Sinner, world number one, announced his withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters 1000 due to a knee problem, which is why he continues without returning to the competition since he won Wimbledon.

Sinner will not be able to play in the Chinese tournament, which begins next week, after having also given up defending his title at the China Open in Beijing. The Italian has not competed since defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final.

The 25-year-old tennis player also withdrew from the US Open due to a right knee injury. The situation has prevented him from returning to the circuit in the second half of the season.

“Unfortunately, this year I will not be able to play the Rolex Shanghai Masters as I expected,” Sinner wrote on his social media. “I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans and I am very sorry that I won’t be able to do so next week. Thank you for all your support. I hope to see you again next year.”

Last week, Sinner had already confirmed that he would not participate in Beijing and explained that his knee was not yet in the necessary condition to compete.

“My knee is not where I would like it and I am not yet ready to compete, but I will do everything possible to be on the track as soon as possible,” he said then.

Sinner’s absence is another blow to the Asian ATP calendar and prolongs the uncertainty about his return to the courts.
