MIAMI- Various international leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, congratulated this Monday the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, who took office in a ceremony held on Capitol Hill in Washington.
Netanyahu applauded his return to the White House and highlighted the historic Abraham Accords, through which Israel signed peace with four Arab countries. Furthermore, he expressed his hope that, under his mandate, “the defeat of Iran’s terrorist axis” will be achieved, ushering in “a new era of peace and prosperity” in the Middle East.
“You withdrew from the dangerous nuclear deal with Iran. You recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. You moved the American embassy to Jerusalem and recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu recalled in a video.
He also welcomed Trump’s efforts to free Israeli hostages and expressed his willingness to work together to destroy Hamas’s military capabilities, end its rule in Gaza and ensure Israel’s security.
For his part, the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, congratulated Trump and expressed his desire to work for peace through “the two-state solution.”
In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky described the inauguration as a day of change that brings “hope” to solve many problems. He stressed that cooperation with the United States will be “active and mutually beneficial.”
Europe and transatlantic ties
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the relationship of “collaboration, cooperation and partnership” between the United Kingdom and the United States, highlighting the “unbreakable foundations” of both nations. He assured that the “special relationship” will continue to flourish during Trump’s term.
In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her best wishes and hopes that this period will strengthen relations between Rome and Washington in the face of global challenges. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated the importance of a good transatlantic relationship, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured that Trump’s return will “turbocharge” defense investment.
Other European leaders, such as the president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis; Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Swedish leader Ulf Kristersson expressed their willingness to cooperate closely with the new US administration.
Congratulations from other continents
From Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese underlined the strength of the alliance with the United States, while European leaders such as Alexander de Croo (Belgium), Donald Tusk (Poland), Kristen Michal (Estonia) and Andrej Plenkovic (Croatia) also extended their congratulations and expressed confidence in a fruitful cooperation.
