Ifo: German industrial companies expect negative effects from Trump’s victory

Many industrial companies in Germany are worried about negative effects on their operations if Donald Trump is elected US President in November. In a survey by the Munich Ifo Institute, 44 percent of industrial companies stated this. Only five percent expect positive effects. For 51 percent of industrial companies, it makes no difference who wins the election.

“Companies with close economic ties to the USA in particular expect negative consequences if Trump wins the election,” explained Ifo researcher Andreas Baur on Thursday. The proportion for these companies was 48 percent. However, many companies without direct export relationships to the USA also fear harmful effects because they could be indirectly affected as suppliers.

According to an Ifo survey, most industrial companies are currently expecting a close election result. Around half see the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the lead, and one in five companies see the Republican Donald Trump. A third see the two as equal. The Ifo surveyed around 2,000 industrial companies in September.
