IDEA Group recognizes the democratic commitment of María Corina Machado when appointing a candidate

CARACAS.- The former heads of State and Government who make up the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA Group) In a statement, they recognized the decision of opposition leader María Corina Machado to register the candidacy of Corina Yoris, academic and professor, for the presidential elections to be held in Venezuela on July 28.

This Saturday, March 23, IDEA recalled that the choice of Yoris as opposition standard bearer was assumed “in the face of the fatal expiration of the deadline set by the dictatorship in order to control the electoral process and prevent the holding of democratic presidential elections, free, fair and competitive, in which it must participate”. The period for the registration of candidates, which began on March 21, will end on Monday, March 25.

At the same time, the former heads of State and Government expressed their recognition to María Corina Machado, who won the opposition primaries in October 2023 with 92% and who is disqualified from politics for 15 years, “for his imperturbable commitment to democracy and the firm decision to lead his nation towards the rescue of constitutionality, as he has announced.

IDEA asks to comply with agreements

The former heads of State and Government of the IDEA Group also pointed out that the guarantors of the Barbados Accords signed between representatives of the Nicolás Maduro regime and the Unitary Platform in 2023, “is up to the challenge posed by María Corina Machado and does not cease its actions to enable Machado, since she was the candidate who the people have chosen in sovereign primary elections”.

In October of last year, IDEA committed to closely monitor compliance with promises to hold presidential elections in 2024. The disqualification of María Corina Machado has been repudiated by the international community who demand the holding of competitive and free elections in Venezuela.
