Harris: Will win nomination and “beat Trump”

US Vice President Kamala Harris has praised President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for a second term as a “patriotic” decision and declared that she would win the nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate and beat Donald Trump. She feels “honored by the president’s support,” Harris said on Sunday after Biden spoke out in favor of his deputy’s candidacy. “My intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris stressed.

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump,” she added. Biden had previously stated that Harris enjoyed his “full support” as the Democratic presidential candidate.

The former Attorney General of California and US Senator became the first woman and first black person to take office as Vice President in January 2021. The 59-year-old was already considered an obvious replacement candidate in the debate about a possible Biden withdrawal.

However, Harris’ approval ratings were low in the polls. Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison announced on Sunday a “transparent and orderly process” to nominate a new candidate. The Democratic Party’s nominating convention will take place in Chicago from August 19 to 22.

Trump’s campaign team spoke disparagingly of Harris on Sunday. “Harris will be even worse for the people of our country than Joe Biden,” the Republican candidate’s team said. The vice president is “just as ridiculous as Biden.”
