US presidential candidate Kamala Harris accused her opponent Donald Trump in their TV duel of spreading lies about his role in the nationwide abolition of abortion rights. “You’re going to hear a lot of lies,” the vice president said on Tuesday evening in the debate broadcast by ABC, referring to Trump’s statements on the important election campaign issue.
As president, Trump “personally selected” three Supreme Court justices, Harris said. He chose her with the intention of overturning the country’s right to abortion. “And they did exactly what he intended.” By telling untruths about these events, “he is insulting American women,” the vice president said.
The conservative-dominated US Supreme Court annulled the nationwide right to abortion in June 2022. Since then, responsibility for abortion rights has rested with the individual states. More than 20 of them have now drastically restricted or abolished abortion rights.
By nominating three conservative judges to the Supreme Court, former President Trump paved the way for the abolition of the right to abortion, which has existed for almost 50 years. In the election campaign, the Republican is now taking the position that abortion rights should remain the responsibility of the states.
