The Food and Medicines Administration (FDA, in English) warned Tuesday that buyers should avoid the consumption of certain frozen shrimp sold in Walmart, due to the concern that seafood may be contaminated with radioactive material.
Health authorities indicated in a press release that they are investigating reports on contamination by CESIO-137 (CS-137) in transport containers and frozen shrimp products processed by an Indonesian company, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, also known as BMS Food.
Some of the frozen raw shrimp products processed by an Indonesian company are sold in Walmart stores in 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia, said the FDA.
Among the products is the “Great Value Value Frozen Shrimp Brand”, according to the Health Agency.

“If you have recently bought frozen raw shrimp in Walmart that coincide with this description, Discharge them“Said the FDA.” This product does not consume or serve. “
Health authorities advised people to consult their medical care providers if they believe they have been exposed to high levels of the pollutant. PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati and Walmart did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
The CS-137 is the radioactive shape of the Cesium, “a soft, flexible and white white metal that becomes liquid at room temperature” used in medical devices and meters, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Repeated low dose exposure from CS-137 can increase the risk of cancer, “as a result of DNA damage within the living cells of the body,” said the health authorities in their press release.

The FDA indicated that the Office of Customs and Border Protection warned the Health Agency on the detection of CS-137 in transport containers in Los Angeles (California), Houston (Texas), Miami (Florida) and Savannah (Georgia). He said I know denied entry to all containers and products that tested positive for the CS-137 tests.
Health authorities also warned that CS-137 was not detected in any product above the “levels that force measures” in the case of CS-137, which is 1,200 bq/kg.
However, the FDA said that “the level detected in the sample of empanados shrimp could represent a potential health risk”If combined with the radiation present in the environment or from medical procedures.
