Front line as a basis for negotiations: Zelenskyj supports Trump’s proposal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has backed US President Donald Trump’s proposal to use the current front line in the Ukraine war as a basis for negotiations with Russia. Trump suggested “staying where we are and starting talks,” Zelensky told journalists on Wednesday during his short visit to Oslo. “I think it’s a good compromise.”

However, Zelensky said he doubts that Russian President Vladimir Putin will also agree to this idea. He said that to Trump too.

Trump and Zelensky met in Washington last Friday. After the meeting at the White House, Trump told reporters that Ukraine and Russia should end fighting along the current front line. “Anything else would be very difficult to negotiate,” he emphasized. Regarding the Donbass, he said: “Let it be divided as it is now.”

Just last Thursday, Trump announced that he wanted to meet with Putin in the Hungarian capital Budapest within two weeks. However, on Tuesday he suggested that a meeting with Putin could be off the table any time soon. He said he didn’t want to “waste time.” However, Moscow said that a summit meeting between Putin and Trump was still being prepared.

Zelenskyj arrived in Oslo on Wednesday, where he met with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Störe. No further details about the meeting were initially announced. A statement from Norway’s Prime Minister Gahr Störe said Norway stands with Ukraine and hopes for a “lasting and just peace that the Ukrainian people deserve.”

According to information from Stockholm, Zelenskyj will travel to neighboring Sweden after his visit to Oslo. Together with Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, an “announcement in the area of arms exports” is planned. As the AFP news agency also learned from Ukrainian government circles, Zelensky is expected to meet with Western allies in Brussels and London this week on Thursday and Friday.
