Foreign Ministry: Rubio grants exceptions for Haiti mission after exposing US help

One day after the exposed US financial contribution for the Haiti mission became known, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued an exception to help. As a spokesman for the US State Department announced on Wednesday, the minister gave the green light for $ 40.7 million (around 39 million euros) of US aid for the Caribbean crisis state.

The United States “did not suspend all support for the multinational security mission in Haiti,” said a spokesman at Rubios arrival in the Dominican Republic, a station during his journey of Central America. The money should therefore go to the Haitian national police and the international Haiti mission to support local security forces in the fight against criminal gangs.

The spokesman added that the United States had also delivered heavy -taked equipment for the mission and the police listed by Kenya on Tuesday.

The UN announced on Tuesday that the United States had suspended its financial contribution to the Haiti mission. According to UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, the US contributions had been stopped with “immediate” effect. The Foreign Ministry did not deny freeze, but reports that it was only a small part of the overall contribution.

The new US President Donald Trump wants to drastically return the international aids in his country. Shortly after taking office, Trump had exposed almost all this aid for three months.

The Haiti team is intended to support the local security forces in their fight against criminal gangs that control large parts of the Caribbean state. The police mission was launched on the basis of an UN Security Council decision in October 2023. However, the mission is not subject to the UN. However, the United Nations set up a fund for voluntary support for the troop.

Last year, more than 5,600 people were killed by gang violence, about a thousand more than in the previous year. More than a million Haitians were driven to flee, that was three times as many as 2023.
