Floyd Mayweather comes out of retirement and announces his return to professional boxing

The historic former world champion Floyd Mayweather surprised the world boxing by announcing that he will officially come out of retirement to fight new professional fights. The 48-year-old American confirmed the news in statements to ESPN, where he assured that he still has what it takes to continue breaking records within the sport.

Mayweather, who retired undefeated in 2017 with a 50-0 record, explained that his return will come after his planned exhibition fight against Mike Tyson this spring. In his own words, his upcoming events will once again dominate the global audience and revenue generation in boxing.

Exclusive post-show deal with Tyson

The return of the nicknamed “Money” will be supported by an exclusive agreement with the promoter CSI Sports/Fight Sports, which will come into effect once his exhibition fight against Tyson ends. Although no rival has yet been confirmed, a first professional fight would be tentatively planned for this summer, with more details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Specialized media have indicated that the exhibition fight could be held on April 25 in the Congo, although the date and venue have not yet been made official.

His last professional fight and undefeated legacy

The last time Mayweather officially fought was in 2017, when he defeated UFC star Conor McGregor by technical knockout in one of the most lucrative events in boxing history. Since then, the American has remained active only in exhibitions, including confrontations with celebrities and media figures.

In August 2024 he also defeated John Gotti III in Mexico, showing that he is still in good physical shape despite his age.

Tyson also returns to the media spotlight

For his part, Mike Tyson, 59, returns to the ring after his last appearance in November 2024, when he was defeated by YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul in Texas. That fight, streamed worldwide, brought together nearly 70,000 live viewers and millions more in front of the screens.

The confrontation between two legends like Tyson and Mayweather promises to generate enormous expectations before the announced professional return of the undefeated American.

The “pound for pound king” who marked an era

In his prime, Mayweather was considered the pound-for-pound king of boxing, dominating the welterweight division for more than a decade thanks to his nearly impenetrable defense, strategic intelligence and outstanding physical preparation.

Although his style and some decisions outside the ring generated controversy throughout his career, his sporting legacy remains unquestionable. Now, with his return confirmed, professional boxing could experience one of the most high-profile comebacks in recent years.
