Florida congressman accused of diverting $5 million in FEMA funds

MIAMI.— The United States Department of Justice announced this Wednesday the formal indictment against the Democratic federal representative of Florida, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, accused of diverting $5 million in federal emergency funds and using part of the money to support her 2021 political campaign. This is one of the most serious corruption accusations brought against a Florida elected official in recent years, according to the DOJ itself.

What would have happened?

According to federal prosecutors, the congresswoman participated in a scheme to steal overpayments made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to Trinity Healthcare Services, a family health care company of which Cherfilus-McCormick was CEO in 2021.

The company had been contracted to provide COVID-19 vaccination registration staff through a federally funded program. Investigators allege that part of those inflated payments was diverted towards contributions linked to his electoral campaign, something prohibited by law.

“Using disaster relief funds to enrich oneself is a particularly selfish and cynical crime,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “No one is above the law, much less powerful people who steal from taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice.”

Background of the case

The alleged diversion of funds is not the first question that the legislator faces. In December 2024, the Florida Division of Emergency Management sued Trinity Healthcare for overcharging the state for nearly $5.8 million in pandemic-related services. The agency detected the irregularity after a one-time payment of five million caught the attention of auditors.

The Office of Congressional Ethics reported last January that Cherfilus-McCormick’s income in 2021 increased by more than $6 million over 2020, driven largely by $5.75 million in fees and profit sharing from Trinity. In July, the House Ethics Committee unanimously reauthorized a subcommittee to investigate the allegations against him.

Who is Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick?

The Democratic congresswoman was first elected in 2022 to represent District 20, which covers areas of Broward and Palm Beach counties, following the death of longtime Rep. Alcee Hastings in 2021. Her business history in the healthcare sector and political rise had gained statewide attention before the allegations surfaced.

Congresswoman’s reaction

Hours after the accusation became known, the representative released a statement in which she categorically rejected the charges:

“This is an unjust, unfounded and false accusation — and I am innocent,” Cherfilus-McCormick said. “The timing alone is curious and clearly intended to distract from much more pressing national issues.”

He assured that he has cooperated from the beginning that “from day one, I have cooperated fully with every legal request, and I will continue to do so until this matter is resolved.”

The legislator also expressed gratitude toward her constituents.

“I am deeply grateful for the support of my district, and I remain confident that the truth will prevail. I look forward to my day in court.”

What is still unknown

So far, the authorities have not explained in detail:

  • How the alleged diversion of funds would have been carried out.
  • If other people are involved in the scheme.
  • Yes additional charges could be filed.
  • Nor if the congresswoman plans to remain in office while the judicial process progresses.

The Department of Justice has also not yet published the complete charging document that specifies each crime attributed to the legislator. So far, no trial date has been announced for CherfilusMcCormick’s case following his indictment by the Department of Justice. The case continues to develop.
