A few days before the presidential elections on June 7, the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, took a symbolic and strategic step by formalizing before a notary his commitment to maintain the historic ownership structure of the white club.
Through an institutional video released to the media, Pérez assured that as long as he continues to lead the entity, Real Madrid will continue to belong to its partners and will not become a sports limited company.
“As long as I am president of the Real Madrid Football Club, I am committed to ensuring that the club always belongs to its members,” said the leader in the recorded message.
Furthermore, the top Madrid leader stressed that he will continue working to protect the financial assets of the institution, insisting that this must also remain in the hands of the partners.
The statement comes in an unusual electoral context for the white club. For the first time since 2006 there will be more than one candidate in a Real Madrid presidential election. On that occasion, Ramón Calderón won at the polls and presided over the entity until 2009, the year in which Florentino Pérez returned to the presidency to begin a second stage that has continued to the present.
The elections on June 7 will pit Florentino Pérez against Enrique Riquelme, a businessman who seeks to end more than a decade and a half of leadership by the current president.
During his mandate, Florentino Pérez has led some of the most successful stages in the history of Real Madrid, both on a sporting and institutional level. Under his management, the club has won multiple national and international titles and has promoted large-scale projects, such as the comprehensive remodeling of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
The notarial commitment announced this Wednesday seeks to reinforce one of the identity pillars of Real Madrid: its status as a club owned by its members, a model that it shares with a small group of historical Spanish football entities.
