Donald Trump’s inauguration moved to the Capitol

Due to the weather conditions: Donald Trump’s swearing-in as US President on January 20th will exceptionally not take place outdoors.

Donald Trump’s (78) inauguration as the 47th President of the USA will take place unscheduled in the domed hall of the Capitol. Due to the expected extreme cold on January 20th, the swearing-in ceremony could not be held outdoors in front of the headquarters of the US Congress in Washington DC as usual, Donald Trump announced on January 17th on his social media platform Truth Social.

Too cold for celebrations

Typically every four years, hundreds of thousands of people gather on the National Mall promenade between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial to witness the event. This is too dangerous given the icy cold, said the US President-elect. “An arctic wind is sweeping across the country. I don’t want people to get hurt or harmed in any way,” he explained. That’s why the inauguration address, prayers and other speeches take place indoors.

Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) also had to move his second inauguration to the Capitol in 1985 – also because of temperatures well below freezing. It won’t be as cold as it was 40 years ago – around minus 14 degrees – for Trump in the capital of the United States. The National Weather Service expects temperatures of around minus eight degrees, but it could feel even colder. Trump had repeatedly used the cold as supposed evidence against global warming.

Live broadcast in the stadium

So that as many people as possible can follow his second swearing-in, there will be a live broadcast of the event in a sports arena in downtown Washington. The traditional parade will also take place there and he himself will be there later, Trump wrote.

All living former US presidents will take part in the event. Including the outgoing head of state Joe Biden (82), although Trump did not appear at his inauguration in 2021 after his defeat against him. Tech greats such as Elon Musk (53), Jeff Bezos (61) and Mark Zuckerberg (40) are also said to be on the guest list.
