The Toronto Blue Jays and the star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. face a large gap in contract extension negotiations.
The Blue Jays and Guerrero are separated by at least $100 million, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports, adding that the player is seeking a mega deal worth at least $450 million.
The 25-year-old said on a podcast in December that the Blue Jays made him an offer of around $340 million, but the proposed deal wasn’t close to what he was looking for.
Guerrero can test free agency after the 2025 season. He added that he will not be interested in continuing negotiations once spring training begins.
Both the Blue Jays and Guerrero have said publicly in the past that they are interested in finding a way to keep the four-time All-Star in Toronto on a long-term contract.
Guerrero hit 30 home runs with 103 RBI and a .940 OPS in 159 games last season en route to finishing sixth in American League MVP voting and winning the second Silver Slugger of his career. The 2021 AL runner-up will be the top free agent available next offseason if he hits the open market.
