MIAMI.- The Miami Dolphins They will sign another quarterback while their starter Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with his latest concussion, coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Friday.
For now, Skylar Thompson will be considered the Dolphins’ starter while Tagovailoa is out. The quarterback left Thursday’s 31-10 loss to Buffalo in the third quarter after suffering the third concussion of his career, all within a span of 24 months.
“The team and the organization have complete confidence in Skylar,” McDaniel said.
McDaniel said the team has not made a decision on whether to place Tagovailoa on injured reserve. The quarterback is expected to report to the team’s facility on Friday to begin the evaluation process.
“We have to operate with the unknown and prepare for any situation,” McDaniel said, adding that the only opinions that matter to the team are those of Tagovailoa and the medical staff.
McDaniel added that he does not believe Tagovailoa will be in Miami’s next game against Seattle on Sept. 22.
“I have no idea and I’m not going to start making decisions that I’m not even involved in overall,” McDaniel added. “All I told Tua is we hope this weekend is a dad and only a dad. And then we’ll move on. We won’t talk about where we’re headed in that regard … none of that will happen without the knowledge of the doctors and the player.”
Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes for 145 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions — one returned by Buffalo for a score — while getting hurt. Thompson completed eight of 14 passes for 80 yards.
Ready to take a step forward
Thompson said he believes he is “fully equipped” to lead the Dolphins’ offense.
“What’s next, who knows, but I feel confident,” Thompson said after Thursday’s game. “I feel ready for whatever comes next. I’m going to prepare and work hard and do everything I can to lead the team and do my job.”
