With the clear victory of his party Ano (yes), Babis made a sensational political comeback. Babis spoke of a “historical result” after his victory became known. It was the “absolute highlight” of his political career, said the entrepreneur, who had already been head of government between 2017 and 2021. He discussed “the election result and our picture in NATO and the EU with the president,” said Babis.
The party alliance Spolu (joint) of the previous conservative Prime Minister Petr Fiala made it to second place in the two -day parliamentary election with 23.4 percent. The liberal coalition partner Stan came to 11.2 percent. The elected Prime Minister Fiala congratulated Babis on his election victory and excluded the opportunity to forge a new government coalition.
Babis already clarified on Saturday evening that he did not want to form a government coalition: “A government with only one party” hovered. Babis wants to get support from the right -wing extremist party SPD, which came to 7.8 percent of the vote, and the right -wing driver party, which received 6.8 percent.
In its election programs, the right-wing extremist SPD promises a referendum about the exit of the EU in the Czech Republic, which is vehemently rejecting Babis. On Saturday evening, the election winner emphasized: “We are clearly pro-European and pro-Nato.” He promised the President to “propose a solution to him with the Czech and European laws in harmony,” said Babis on Sunday.
Political scientist Otto Eibl from the University of Masaryk in Brno includes the right -wing extremist SPD a decisive role. It remains to be seen whether the party will “be satisfied to stay outside the government and to have a certain impact on their policy,” said Eibl of the AFP news agency.
The Ano party convinced many Czechs with their election promises regarding social benefits and the hiring of military aid for Ukraine. Babis also comments on this after his election victory.
“We help Ukraine through the EU and the EU helps Ukraine. And so we will continue to help,” he said in a video published on Sunday by the Ukrainian broadcaster. When asked by a Ukrainian journalist, whether he would support Kiev’s application to join the EU, Babis replied that Ukraine was “not ready for the EU”. “We have to end the war first,” he added.
The Czech Republic has so far been a determined ally of Ukraine in defense against Russia under the multi -party government listed by Fiala. The previous Czech government has supported Ukraine with humanitarian and military aid since the beginning of the Russian attack war in February 2022. However, many Czechs had accused her of ignoring the problems in her own country.
Under a government led by Babis, the country could approach Slovakia and Hungary on this issue of the EU countries that are currently politically the closest to Russia. Babis goes well with the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Together with Orban, Babis had founded the right wing parliamentary group Patriots for Europe in the European Parliament, which belongs to the Ano party. Ano is allied with more or less openly Russia -friendly forces such as Orban’s Fidesz, the French racial nationally nationally of the multiple presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, the Italian Lega and the Austrian FPÖ.
