Customs conflict: Trump grants Mexico postponement by 90 days

In the customs conflict, US President Donald Trump granted the neighboring country Mexico for 90 days. A few hours before the deadline on Friday night, Trump wrote in his online service Truth Social on Thursday, because of the common border with Mexico, things with many “complexities” were affected. Shortly before, Trump had emphasized that he would not grant any further extensions.

Trump had threatened Mexico with 30 percent tariffs from Friday if there was no agreement. Now he wrote after a phone call with the Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and a preliminary agreement continued for 90 days. Among them are 25 percent inch for US imports from Mexico cars and 50 percent for steel, aluminum and copper.

So far, a 25 percent surcharge for products that have not fallen under a North America Agreement (USMCA) that Trump had closed with Mexico and Kanda during his first term (2017 to 2021). The agreement deals with industrial machines, electronics and agricultural products.

The 90 days are apparently not carved in stone either. Trump described it as the goal of “signing Mexico within the 90-day period or later a trade agreement”.

Trump had described the 1st August several times as a final period in the global trade conflict, which he had proclaimed in April. On Friday, for example, higher tariffs of 15 percent of the EU come into force on most products. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had agreed with Trump on this last weekend in Scotland.
