VALENCIA.- The meetings of the King’s Cup involving Valencia and Levante were postponed due to the floods that have left at least 70 dead and led to the devastation of the south of Spain.
Other sporting events were also affected by the intense flooding that swept away cars, turned town streets into rivers and interrupted train and highway service in the most devastating natural disaster in recent years in the European nation.
Clubs, soccer stars and other athletes — including Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, Diego Simeone and Thibaut Courtois — posted messages of support on social media.
“Real Madrid is completely devastated and expresses its solidarity with the people affected by the catastrophe, to whom it expresses all its support and sympathy,” the club said.
Both Madrid and Barcelona held a minute of silence during their training sessions on Wednesday.
Valencia were due to face Parla Escuela in the first round of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, while Levante was scheduled to visit Pontevedra.
Other midweek Cup matches could also be cancelled, and Saturday’s league match between Valencia and Real Madrid could change dates.
Other sports affected
The MotoGP race in two weeks in Valencia is also in doubt after reports emerged that flooding affected the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.
Some basketball games were rescheduled because travel in the country was also affected.
The intense rains caused flooding in the South and East of Spain between Malaga and Valencia. Floods of mud sent vehicles rolling through the streets at full speed, while pieces of wood were seen floating with household items. Police and rescue services had to use helicopters to get people out of their homes, as well as boats to reach motorists who climbed onto the roofs of their vehicles.
