Conoma Trail Race, a race that combines coastal tourism and sport

CARACAS.- This July 20th the second edition of the career Conoma Trail Race mountain, a sporting event that also serves as a promoter of tourism on the coast of Anzoátegui (Venezuela).

To carry out the meeting, the beach Conoma and El Alto del Chaparro de Guanta will once again become the sporting epicenter of eastern Venezuela for this mountain race, which hopes to surpass the success of 2023, when more than 115 athletes competed through routes drawn on the coast and in the dense mountains of the region.

With this activity, the organizers -Ultramaratones Venezuela, Triada Running and Ara Meru Lodge- seek to promote sports tourism and the integration of the community in the practice of the discipline.

“One of our goals is to try to promote these tourist and historical sites that we have in our country. We all know what Canaima means to us and so we are going to try to do sports tourism in other destinations,” said Oliver Hernández, director of Triada Running, in a press conference in which DIARIO LAS AMÉRICAS was present.

“Conoma is located in a very touristy area and the participants have already made their plans to stay in the area; however, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that the area has many inns,” added Alejandra Díaz, commercial director of the Ara Meru Lodge hotel.

The organisers also stressed the importance of holding these sporting events consecutively, changing the destinations, increasing the demands on the runners or lengthening the distances to make the races more attractive, since mountain runners are always looking for new places.

Race distances

Both distances of the Conoma Trail Race have a significant level of altitude, which could mean athletes could take up to four hours to complete them.

“The 18-kilometer distance has 1,000 meters of positive elevation gain; the long distance of 28 kilometers, with 1,600 meters of positive elevation gain; and the six-kilometer walk, has significant descents and climbs,” explained the coach of Ultramaratones Venezuela, Hilenia Andrades.

In this sense, Conoma Trail Race will have its respective marked routes, refreshment and security checkpoints.

“In addition to hydration and technical food, we will also deploy medical personnel who can be located at some points in case any athlete requires it,” added José Zamora, director of Ultramaratones Venezuela.

Social responsability

As they did in the first edition of the Conoma Trail Race – in which they recovered the Chaparro de Guanta chapel and the basketball court – in terms of social responsibility they plan to build a clinic for this second edition to hold health days together with foundations and volunteers.

The Circuit in Venezuela

On the other hand, the organizers revealed at the press conference that after the second edition of the Conoma Trail Race, the third edition of El Circuito will be held: a mountain race that will be divided into four zones in Venezuela, which will start at Waraira Repano, known as El Ávila, in Caracas; then it will continue at the Boriza stables, in Paracotos (Miranda); a cross country, in Lechería (Anzoátegui); and close at the end of 2024 with a trekking in Auyantepui until reaching Angel Falls, in Canaima National Park (Bolívar).

“The idea is to train athletes and people who get involved in this type of activity so that they can improve their level and plan ahead,” said Hilenia Andrades.
