MIAMI-. He President of the Colombian Football Federation, Ramón Jesurúnwas arrested in Miami (United States) during an incident that occurred on Sunday in the final of the America Cupaccording to a police report issued Monday.
A Miami-Dade County (Florida) police file indicates that Jesurún was arrested on charges of “assault on officer/employee.”
On Sunday night, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium was in chaos as fans entered the Copa América final, in which Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 with a goal in extra time by Lautaro Martínez.
Running, people being pushed to the ground, and even some people trying to get in through the stadium’s air conditioning ducts, according to videos posted on social media, delayed the start of the match by 80 minutes.
After the match, Ramón Jesurún, 71, was heading to the pitch with his son and other relatives for the awards ceremony, but security personnel prevented them from entering, reported Colombian newspaper El Tiempo.
The leader’s son, Ramón Jamil, allegedly clashed with one of the security guards at the venue, according to the same media outlet.
Jesurún, who is also vice president of CONMEBOL and a member of the FIFA World Council, also participated in the fight and was arrested along with Ramón Jamil, the newspaper explained.
The leader also faces a lawsuit in his country, where a commercial court imposed a fine of about $80,000 for participating in a scheme to divert and resell tickets for Colombia’s games in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Russia. A court is considering Jesurún’s appeal of that sanction.
Successful in the sporting arena, Colombia’s participation in this Copa America was marked by several incidents off the field. After beating Uruguay 1-0 in the semi-finals, fans of ‘La Tricolor’ got into a brawl in the stands with Uruguayan fans and several players from that team.
