The new tariffs being pushed by US President Joe Biden, aimed at propping up the US steel sector and courting its workers, would impose 25% levies on certain Chinese steel and aluminum products. They would be applied as part of an ongoing review, as the United States also launches a formal investigation into the China shipbuilding industry.
Analysts said the measures would have minimal economic impact. Chinese steel and aluminum imports amounted to approximately 1.7 billion dollars in 2023, a small portion of the overall market. Still, U.S. officials said the announcements were designed to prevent an expected surge and safeguard the U.S. market.
