China close to unprecedented day at Olympics

SAINT-DENIS-. China finished 7 out of 7 in the bidding for the gold medals of the diving program of the Olympics from Paris, coming within one shot of completing an unprecedented sweep of the pit.

Chen Yiwen won the women’s 3m springboard on Friday for China’s seventh gold medal. Australia’s Maddison Keeney took silver, and China’s Chang Yani took bronze.

It was Chen’s second gold in Paris, having earlier won the 3m synchronised event with partner Chang.

Chen won with 376.00 points in five dives, followed by Keeney (343.10) and Chang (318.75). Italy’s Chiara Pellacani was fourth with 309.60.

The sweep could happen on Saturday in the final diving session of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the men’s 10-meter platform.

China dominates all phases of diving, but none more so than the women’s 3-meter springboard. China has won the event at 10 consecutive Olympics.

The last time they failed to win was in 1984 at the Los Angeles Games, where China won its first diving gold medal.

Including Friday’s results, China has won 54 of 71 diving gold medals since 1984. Since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the country has won 34 of 39 gold medals in the discipline.
