Chargé d’affaires of the Washington embassy in Havana visits Oscar Elías Biscet, Cuban opponent

Mike Hammer, charge d’affaires of the Washington embassy in Havana, visited the doctor at his residence in Lawton, Diez de Octubre municipality of the Cuban capital. Oscar Elías Bisceta prominent opponent of the regime, reported through a message sent to the editorial office of Las Americas NewspaperElsa Morejón, human rights activist and wife of Dr. Biscet.

Biscet, founder of the Emilia project, former prisoner of the Black Spring of 2003 and member of the group of 75 who during that repressive wave were sentenced to 25 years in prison, once released after the regime’s agreements with the mediation of the Catholic church, He refused to be expatriated and due to the continuity of his confrontation with the dictatorship through methods of peaceful civil disobedience, he remains limited in his freedom of movement and consequently is arrested by the forces repressive, frequently.

Hammer’s visit to Biscet takes place a few days after, during a tour in Miami, the US official met with several groups of Cuban exiles, knowledgeable about the reality of the island, opponents and leaders of organizations that lead efforts to a democratic change in Cuba.

Hammer, a diplomat by profession, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in that responsibility, would have the possibility of remaining in office under the administration of President-elect Donald Trump, which begins on January 20.

In the meetings held in Miami in which DIARIO LAS AMERICAS was present, Hammer was interested in knowing how the US can support the management of independent and opposition journalists on the island.

During the meeting held with Dr. Biscet and Elsa Morejón, the activists described the serious violations of human rights that take place in Cuba, among other topics, according to reports.

Morejón wrote in his message sent to this editorial office, “his (Mike Hammer’s) visit to our house was a pleasure for me and great solidarity support for the human rights movement in Cuba and the political prisoners.”

Coinciding with Hammer’s visit to Miami, on January 7, Dr. Biscet was being arrested by the regime’s Political Police when he tried to leave his home to meet with activists from the Emilia Project. That day, without a prior police order as usually happens, they took him to a police station outside his area of residence and nine hours later, without any explanation, they released him. This method of consecutive arrests and siege against Biscet and other activists and independent journalists is carried out by the Cuban repressive forces based on a figure they identify as extra-penal license, that is, the times that the police are ordered by state security to carry out a arrest does, regardless of any constitutional rights.
