TORONTO- Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Finance Minister and one of the figures closest to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, resigned from her position in a context marked by the Canadian leader’s decline in popularity.
In a letter posted on the social network X, Freeland explained the reasons for her resignation, “we disagree about the best path forward for Canada.” The former minister made reference to the economic challenges facing the country, exacerbated by the protectionist stance of the United States.
“Today our country faces a great challenge. The new US administration is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism,” he said.
“Trust”
Freeland, who has held multiple ministerial positions since Trudeau came to power in 2015, indicated that the prime minister’s lack of confidence in his management was decisive, “to be effective, a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence.” (…) You have made it clear that I no longer credibly have this trust and that I no longer have the authority that this implies.”
Despite being offered another cabinet position last Friday, Freeland said the only honest decision was to resign.
