The Portuguese Bruno Fernandes was chosen as the best footballer of the season in the Premier League after leading Manchester United’s great campaign.
The 31-year-old midfielder had a historic season by equaling the record for most assists in a single Premier League campaign with 20 assists on goal, a mark shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
In addition to his creative ability, Fernandes contributed eight goals in the league and was a key piece for the team led by Michael Carrick to finish in third position and secure qualification for the next edition of the Champions League.
The United captain became the club’s first player to win this recognition since the 2010-11 season. His consistent performance throughout the campaign also saw him previously scoop the Footballer of the Year award from the Football Journalists Association.
Fernandes beat notable figures such as David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice of Arsenal, as well as Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo of Manchester City, in the final vote.
On the other hand, young defender Nico O’Reilly was chosen as the best young player of the season.
The 21-year-old footballer managed to establish himself as a starter on City’s left back and also stood out in midfield, where he scored five goals and three assists.
O’Reilly had decisive performances in domestic finals, including a brace against Arsenal in the League Cup final and a start in City’s victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Among the other nominees for the best young person award were Rayan Cherki, Mateus Fernández, Lewis Hall, Michael Kayode, Kobbie Mainoo, Alex Scott and Eli Junior Kroupi.
