He Camp Nou It will be the scene of the Champions League final of the 2028-2029 season. UEFA confirmed this Tuesday the choice of the stadium of the FC Barcelona during its executive committee meeting held in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The designation will allow Barcelona to once again host the most important match in European club football 30 years after the last final played at the Camp Nou. For the 2027-2028 season, UEFA has chosen Munich as the venue for the grand final.
The last Champions League final held at the Camp Nou took place in 1999 and left one of the most memorable outcomes of the competition. Manchester United came back against Bayern Munich with two goals in added time to win 2-1 and win the title.
The Camp Nou will once again host a Champions League final
The 2029 final will be only the third final of the European Cup or Champions League played in the Barça stadium. The first took place in 1989, when Milan clearly beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0.
The new designation comes while the Camp Nou continues to be immersed in a major remodeling process. The project contemplates that the stadium will have a cover and reach a total capacity of 104,000 spectators, making it one of the largest capacity sports venues in the world.
Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, celebrated UEFA’s decision and described the choice as a source of pride for the club and its fans. He also considered that it represents international recognition of the new stadium and the transformation it is undergoing.
Munich will host the final a year earlier
Munich, for its part, will host a Champions League final again in 2028. The German city has much more experience organizing this type of match than Barcelona, since the last final played there was in 2025.
On that occasion, Paris Saint-Germain won its first Champions League after beating Inter 5-0. Three years earlier, in 2012, Chelsea also lifted the trophy in Munich after defeating Bayern in a penalty shootout at the German team’s own stadium.
In addition, the old Olympic Stadium in Munich was the scene of three other finals of the top European competition. Nottingham Forest won the 1979, Marseille won the 1993 and Borussia Dortmund were champions in 1997.
With the 2028 and 2029 venues already defined, UEFA is preparing two finals in stadiums with a long European tradition. Barcelona will have the opportunity to once again become the center of continental football with the renovated Camp Nou as the main protagonist.
