WARSAW.- The captain of the Polish team, its top scorer and figure of the Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski, He will miss the debut in the Euro Cup against the Netherlands after suffering a muscle injury on Monday during the friendly match against Turkey, the doctor of the Polish Football Federation announced on Tuesday.
“We are doing everything possible so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria,” said Dr. Jacek Jaroszewski in a statement.
The FC Barcelona striker had to retire in the 33rd minute of the friendly match against Turkey played on Monday night in Warsaw.
At 35 years of age, Lewandowski aspires to play in his fourth European Championship, a tournament in which he has scored four goals in eleven games played.
Poland is in Group D of the Euro Cup, along with France, the Netherlands and Austria.
He will make his debut against the 'Oranje' team on Sunday.
More hope on the other side:
The Polish team's doctor was optimistic regarding the health of two other injured forwards, Pawel Dawidowicz and Karol Swiderski.
“Both should return to complete training in three or four days, following the recovery plan in place,” he indicated.
Poland is suffering a plague of injuries in its attack line, since last Friday it lost Juventus player Arkadiusz Milik for the entire championship, who suffered a knee injury in the first friendly against Ukraine and had to be meniscus surgery.
Despite the presence of senior and experienced players, such as Lewandowski, it seems unlikely that the Polish team will be able to advance to the next phase, due to the presence of the great favorite France and the always fearsome Netherlands squad, both with a track record of much more success.
