BARCELONA.- The president of Barcelona, Joan Laportaconsidered this Wednesday that “speculating” about a possible return to the legend’s club Lionel Messi as a player “it’s not realistic.”
In an interview with Catalunya Radio, Laporta, asked about Messi’s message after his impromptu visit to the Camp Nou On Sunday, he repeated that he wanted to organize a “tribute” to the Argentine genius, but that Barcelona fans should not wait for their idol to return as a footballer.
“Things did not end as we would have liked. If in some way this tribute can repair what was not done, I think it would be a good thing. But with the immense respect I have for Messi, for all the club’s professionals and members, I think that speculating (on an eventual return as a player) is not realistic,” he explained.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who left his training club involuntarily for financial reasons in 2021 and signed for Paris Saint-Germain, stated on Instagram on Sunday that he wanted to “return” to the Camp Nou “and not just to say goodbye as a player.”
Furthermore, in an interview with the newspaper Sport on Tuesday, he commented on his desire to return to live in Barcelona, after his impromptu visit to the legendary stadium, still under construction, on Sunday night.
“I didn’t know he was coming, but the Spotify Camp Nou is his home. I think it was a small spontaneous and nice initiative,” said Laporta.
The president assured that the club “is currently working” so that Messi “receives the most beautiful tribute in the world” once the Camp Nou works are finished, in front of “105,000 spectators.”
