Barcelona defeats Real Madrid 5-2 and wins its 15th Spanish Super Cup

JEDDAH.- He FC Barcelona was proclaimed champion of the Spanish Super Cup this Sunday after coming back and beating the real Madrid(5-2) in the final played in Jedá (Saudi Arabia).

Frenchman Kylian Mbappé (5) put the current League champion ahead, but goals from Lamine Yamal (22), Robert Lewandowski (36 from a penalty), Raphinha (39, 48) and Alejandro Balde (45+10) left the Catalans Rodrygo’s free-kick goal (60) was void.

The Barça team, which in the second half lost goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny (56) with a straight red card and saw the return of Dani Olmo, thus added a 15th National Super Cup to its record.

The night looked complicated for the culés after a masterful play by Frenchman Mbappé ended in the first goal of the match. The Frenchman took advantage of a counterattack to get away from Balde and unleash a cross shot at the long post of Polish goalkeeper Szczesny.

But Barça soon turned the light around. Yamal tied the match in the 22nd minute after a pass into space from Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, which allowed the Spanish international to shine with a low cross shot with his left foot that a hitherto successful Thibaut Courtois could not stop.

When it seemed that Real Madrid was getting scared again, the Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga caused a penalty after hitting Gavi, which referee Jesús Gil Manzano whistled after the VAR call and review on the screen.

Lewandowski converted the maximum penalty in the 36th minute with a powerful shot at mid-height and very tight to the left of Courtois.

Three minutes later, Raphinha struck again after taking advantage of a pinpoint cross from Frenchman Jules Koundé from distance. The Brazilian headed powerfully in the race to put the third on the scoreboard.

With time already expired in the first half, Yamal assisted Raphinha, who gave the ball to Balde who came in from behind to shoot from point-blank range without the Belgian goalkeeper being able to stop it.

Second half

After the break, Vinicius gave an assist to his compatriot Rodrygo, but his right foot hit the post.

Later, Pedri gave an excellent pass to an active Raphinha, who sent the ball into the back of the net.

Everything was decided, but a foul by Szczsny when he was facing the goal left the Blaugranas with ten players in the 56th minute. Furthermore, Rodrygo executed the foul perfectly. The newly admitted Iñaki Peña could not save the ball, despite having touched it.

There was still half an hour left, but the scoreboard would not move and Hansi Flick won the first title of the year and the first as culé coach.
