At least 10 people have been hospitalized in California and Nevada after an outbreak of Listeria that investigate the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English), according to the FDA in a statement issued on Saturday.

As part of the actions to share the disease, they are voluntarily withdrawing from the market food ready to consume produced by Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC, of San Fernando, California, the company reported.

The retirement includes more than 80 different products, from refrigery boxes, sandwiches and some pasta. Withdrawn products have an expiration date between April 22 and May 19 and belong to Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market, Fresh Food To Go and Fresh Take Crave Away brands.

The retired products were distributed in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington in various places, such as hospitals, hotels, corporate offices, convenience stores, airports and airlines.

“The FDA and the CDC began investigating this outbreak in 2024; however, there were not enough tests in the previous research to identify the origin of the outbreak,” said the FDA. “The investigation was reopened in April 2025 after FDA researchers found Listeria in environmental samples collected in Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC during an inspection of routine surveillance.”

The agencies used the sequencing of the complete genome to link the strain of Listeria found in Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC with the outbreak caused by the disease.

Fresh & Ready Foods has taken immediate corrective measures, including equipment withdrawal, to address this problem and guarantee continuous food security and compliance with the FDA guidelines, the company declared in a statement.

Of the 10 known sick people, 8 were hospitalized in California and 2 in Nevada.

Listeriosis symptoms, or Listeria infection, usually appear within 2 weeks after the ingestion of contaminated foods, but can occur from the same day of consumption to 10 weeks later, according to the FDA.

The FDA recommends retail and consumers who bought or received retired products that clean and disinfect any area that they have touched, since Listeria can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.

The federal entity also recommends risk groups, including pregnant women and newborns, people over 65 and those with weakened immune systems, who contact their doctor if symptoms begin, such as fever, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhea.
