A national survey published on Thursday, July 18, by the CBS television network indicates that Donald Trump’s advantage, the Republican candidate for the November elections in the United States, over Joe Biden increased to five points.
The survey, conducted between July 16 and 18 (after the attempted assassination of Trump) with interviews with 2,247 people and a margin of error of 2.7 percent, indicates that the 52 percent of likely voters in the election would choose the Republican candidate while 47 percent would decide for Biden.
On July 3, the same CBS survey indicated that Trump’s lead over Biden was two points50 percent for the Republican versus 48 percent for the Democrat.
However, Thursday’s poll also indicated that only 48 percent of respondents would vote for Kamala Harris, Biden’s “number two” in the re-election race and a possible replacement for the current Democratic candidate, as president compared to 51 percent who would vote for Trump.
CBS noted that the last time a Republican won the presidential election by more than five points was more than 30 years ago and that, in the past 20 years, no conservative candidate has received a majority of the votes cast.
The poll also found that while Trump’s response to Saturday’s assassination attempt has won him sympathy, 26 percent of respondents say they are more likely to vote for the Republican and nearly 75 percent say the attack was of no importance.
The CBS poll results add more ammunition to Democrats who are asking Biden to withdraw from the electoral race in favor of another candidate with a better chance of defeating Trump.
