Alcaraz takes a scare before closing it, but passes to eighths in Montecarlo

Montecarlo.- The Spanish tennis player Carlos AlcarazN.3 of the ranking, qualified for the round of 16 of the 1,000 masters of Montecarlo after overcoming Argentine Francisco Cerú (n.22) in 3-6, 6-0 and 6-1.

After a very discreet North American tour (semifinals in Indian Wells and elimination of entry into Miami), Alcaraz seemed to cost him to acclimatize to the beaten earth, which took advantage of him closing it to sign up for the first set.

However, the 21 -year -old young Spanish reacted and only gave a game in the following thirteen played, to advance a tournament that should serve to get in the form of Roland Garros, at the end of May, where he will defend the title conquered last year.

“I didn’t start well. I made many mistakes and let him play on the track, dominating the points,” Alcaraz admitted after the game.

“I knew I had to do something different, play more aggressive and show my best tennis with left and volley … and the most important change was the rest, since I tried to subtract more stuck to the lines to press him,” he added in reference to what happened from the second set.

Without the number 1, the Italian Jannik Sinner, which meets a doping sanction, nor the N.2, Alexander Zverev, eliminated in his debut on Tuesday, Alcaraz has become the great favorite to the title in Montecarlo, a tournament that for now has never won.

In eighths, Alcaraz will measure the German Daniel Altmaier (n.84 and from the previous phase), which on Wednesday defeated the French veteran Richard Gasquet.

In another duel between a Spanish and Argentine tennis player, Malaga Alejandro Davidovich won Tomás Etcheverry 7-6 (7/2) and 6-3 and in the eighth the British Jack Draper will be measured.

The negative note for Spanish tennis was the elimination of Pedro Martínez, who lost in three sets against Portuguese Nuno Borges.
