ROME.- The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz will have the Serbian as an opponent Novak Djokovicwhile the Italian Jannik Sinner will face the German Alexander Zverev during the group stage of the ATP Masters which begins on Sunday in Turin, determined the draw held this Thursday.
A year after being eliminated in the group stage of the ATP Finals, Alcaraz, world number 2 and leader of “The Race”, the annual classification that determines the eight participants of this year-end tournament, will face Djokovic, a record seven-time winner of the competition.
“Djoko” returned to the court this week in Athens after a long hiatus following his semifinal loss in Shanghai.
Although the president of the Italian Tennis Federationorganizer of the tournament, assured that the Serbian, absent last year, would be in Turin, Djokovic explained on Wednesday in Athens that he had not yet confirmed his participation.
His group, called Jimmy Connors, is completed by the American Taylor Fritz and the Australian Alex De Miñaur.
World number 1 and defending champion, Sinner will face Bjorn Borg in the group, Zverev, the American Ben Shelton and the last placed player, who will be the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime or the Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
If Musetti wins the Athens tournament this week, he will get the last ticket to Turin. If not, this ticket will be for Auger-Aliassime, currently eighth in “The Race” after his final at the Paris Masters 1000 -lost to Sinner-.
At the end of this group stage, the two best players in each group will advance to the semifinals, on November 15, before the final on Sunday that could determine the identity of the world number 1, between Sinner and Alcaraz, at the end of the 2025 season.
Among the eight participants, only Sinner (2024), Djokovic (2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022 and 2023) and Zverev (2018 and 2021) have already won the prestigious “Masters Tournament”.
