The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz confirmed that he will not play the Mutua Madrid Open due to an injury to his right wrist, thus adding to the absence of Novak Djokovic and leaving the tournament without two of its great figures.
“Madrid is home… and it hurts me a lot not to be able to play here,” said the world number two on his social networks, visibly affected by missing one of the most important events on his calendar.
A more serious injury than expected
Alcaraz has been suffering from discomfort since his participation in the Conde de Godó Trophy, where he had to withdraw after his debut against Otto Virtanen.
Although he initially tried to downplay the ailment, medical tests confirmed that the injury is more serious than expected, forcing him to stop to avoid greater risks.
The Murcian had just played the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, where he lost to Jannik Sinner, accumulating physical wear and tear in recent weeks.
Madrid is left without its great stars
Alcaraz’s loss is added to that of Djokovic, who also resigned from the tournament due to shoulder problems. Both are two of the main attractions of the contest held in the Caja Mágica.
The Spaniard, champion in Madrid in 2023, had already missed the 2025 edition due to injury, which prolongs his bad streak with the home tournament.
Objective: reach Rome and Roland Garros
Now, both Alcaraz and Djokovic aim to reappear at the Masters 1000 in Rome, before playing Roland Garros, where the Spaniard will defend the title.
Uncertainty grows on the clay court tour, which loses two of its top figures in one of the key tournaments of the season.
