“One of the first steps for a complete termination of the war could be the adjustment of attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure,” wrote Selenskyj in the online service X. He supported this on the phone call with Trump. “Ukraine has confirmed that we are ready to implement this,” he added. It was the first conversation between Trump and Selenskyj since the scandal in the White House a good two weeks ago.
After the conversation, Trump’s spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that Trump had taken a takeover of Ukrainian power plants through the USA. “The best protection” for the Ukrainian energy infrastructure would be if it was owned by the United States, said Leavitt.
The US President also promised Selenskyj to ensure that Ukraine received more support for their air defense from European allies. In addition, the presidents had agreed a “close exchange of information” between the armed forces, added Leavitt.
Trump himself explained in his online service Truth Social that the conversation with Selenskyj was “very good”. Based on his phone call to Putin on Tuesday, he spoke to the Ukrainian President about how the “demands and needs” of Ukraine and Russia could be “coordinated”.
Trump and Putin had spoken together for an hour and a half and talked about the war in Ukraine. According to Kremlin, Putin agreed to suspend the attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. However, the Russian president did not agree to a comprehensive ceasefire proposed by the USA and Ukraine.
A few hours after the phone call between the Russian and the US President, Russia attacked Ukraine on Wednesday night according to Ukrainian information with six rockets and 145 drones. A person was killed in an attack on a residential building in the Sumy region, three other people were injured. In addition, according to the Ministry of Defense, two hospitals were destroyed.
According to the Ukrainian railway company, an energy infrastructure complex of drones was also hit in the Dnipropetrovsk region in the center of the country. “So much for a break in attacks on the energy sector or an energy weapon rest through the enemy!” Commented the railway company.
Russia also accused Ukraine of undermining the diplomatic efforts through attacks. Moscow reported a fire in an oil warehouse in the Krasnodar region in the southwest of the country as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack.
According to Selenskyj, the talks with US representatives about a ceasefire with Russia could be continued “in the coming days”. The second round of negotiation, like the first last week, is to take place in the Saudi Arabian city of Dschidda.
The US special envoy Steve Witkoff had previously said in the US broadcaster Bloomberg that the talks could be resumed on Monday. Anyone who should take part in the talks alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the national security advisor Mike Waltz remained open. Witkoff continued to say that a ceasefire could possibly be reached “within a few weeks”. In addition, a meeting between Trump and Putin was “probably”, he added, without calling a time.
Kremlin spokesman Peskow said about the next discussions between Russia and the United States that further agreements would be made between the two sides on Thursday and Friday.
