Doral Astrosa nonprofit organization that played baseball recreationally, began playing competitively with the arrival of former Venezuelan player Ricardo Ferrer in 2022.
Initially made up of a fixed group of six children, Ferrer implemented a set of norms and rules that contributed to the gradual and sustained growth of the team.
For his part, Ricardo Ferrer is a professional baseball player with 14 years of experience, certified as a coach and sports trainer. In 2006 he was signed by the Colorado Rockies as one of the best 20 prospects in the world. In Venezuela, he obtained titles such as “Pitcher of the year” (2011-2012) with Leones del Caracas BBC and Champion of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) with the Águilas del Zulia BBC (2016-2017).
In 2024, Ferrer formally assumed management of the team Doral Astrosdetermined to positively transform the sports project. Thanks to his leadership, the team grew exponentially and ended the year with three complete categories under the same name.
Under Ferrer’s direction, the team won tournaments run by Perfect Game and USSSA, sports organizations that promote baseball throughout the United States. In November 2023, the City of Doral and Mayor Christy Fraga publicly recognized the accelerated growth and success of the team, highlighting the hard work and pride that these boys represent for all the citizens of Doral and Miami in general.
The practices do not stop throughout the year and are inspired by the spring training of the Major Leagues, organized by seasons according to ages and abilities. Each coach is in charge of a specific area, and the groups rotate periodically. This method has allowed repetitions to be tripled in each practice area, achieving significant improvement at the end of the year. Training stations include infield and outfield fielding, pitching fundamentals, catching station, hitting and conditioning stations, among others. The coaching team is made up of Daniel Hernández, Guillermo Quintero and Leonardo Reyes (Leones del Caracas and Colorado Rockies).
In addition to achieving a notable improvement on the field, the team has improved in punctuality, attendance and compliance with dress standards, all part of the discipline that Ferrer has established. In 2025, it is expected to increase the number of players and hire new coaches to continue developing this successful project.
The Astros Doral project goes beyond the baseball field. Ferrer’s vision is to continue positively impacting the lives of these young people, as well as their families, through baseball, taking them to a level where they can obtain sports scholarships thanks to their training and continuous improvement.
The first commitment of the year will be from January 29 to February 2, when the Perfect Game Tournament will begin in Weston, Florida, one of the most important events for young baseball and softball talents. The Weston Travel Ball Winter Warm-Up will be a great opportunity for teams to prepare for the season and showcase their skills. The tournament offers a great opportunity for players to be seen by college scouts and recruiters.
