Djokovic celebrates the student victory in Serbia and hopes for a new beginning for his country

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic expressed his satisfaction with the result of the recent legislative elections in his country and expressed his hope that a new political stage will open, after the victory of the student movement that he has publicly supported for the last two years.

«I sincerely hope that it is a new beginning for the country. I am satisfied with these changes. And I hope that the future is happy and prosperous for our country,” Djokovic declared this Monday during a press conference prior to his participation in the Paris Masters 1000.

In early legislative elections in October, a student-backed list defeated President Aleksandar Vucic’s nationalist party, ending 14 years of political dominance.

The result represents a historic change after two years of citizen mobilizations, which began after the collapse of a train station canopy in 2024, a tragedy attributed to corruption that left 16 dead.

During that period, Djokovic expressed his support for the student protests on several occasions. His positions generated tensions with the Serbian authorities and provoked criticism from sensational media close to the then political power.

The winner of 24 Grand Slam titles defended his position and established a difference between his commitment to the country and support for its leaders.

«I am a patriot, but I have always represented my people and not the government. There is, therefore, a big difference,” said the 39-year-old player.

For Djokovic, one of Serbia’s most recognized athletes, the election result opens an opportunity for his country to move towards a different future.
